Seismic Evaluation

Existing buildings are evaluated based on national seismic guidelines such as ASCE-31, FEMA 351, and FEMA 356 which allow careful examination of existing structural and nonstructural systems with consideration of the seismic performance goals set by the VA. For example, in most office buildings where the primary seismic concern is the protection of occupant safety, a lower performance level is normally acceptable. Where operations continuity is important, for example in a medical center, a higher performance level such as immediate occupancy may be appropriate as this addresses the seismic bracing of important medical equipment inside the building. Degenkolb will guide the VISN through the many available options and work toward the most economical solution.
